How to Choose a Pest Control Company in Peoria, IL (9 Questions to Ask First)

The Markley's Pest Services fleet of branded service trucks lined up outside the shop in Morton, Illinois.

Markley’s has served Peoria, Morton, Washington, and the Tri-County area from the same Morton shop since 1984, with technicians who stay for years rather than months.

Nobody researches pest control companies for fun. You are reading this because you found something in your kitchen, or heard something in the wall, and you want it handled.

That urgency is exactly why people end up in contracts they regret. Here are the questions worth two minutes before you sign anything, and what a straight answer to each one sounds like.

1. Are you licensed in Illinois, and are you insured?

Structural pest control operators in Illinois are licensed and regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health, and technicians applying pesticides must be certified. Ask for the license, and ask about liability insurance too. A company that hesitates on either question has answered you.

2. Who is actually coming to my house?

This one separates companies quickly. Ask whether you will see the same technician each visit, how long the technicians have been with the company, and how they are trained.

High turnover is the quiet problem in this industry. A technician who has serviced your street for years knows the housing stock, the recurring problems, and your home specifically. Someone in their third week does not.

3. What exactly does the plan include?

Get specifics. Which pests are covered and which are not. How many visits per year. What happens between scheduled visits. Whether the interior is treated every time or only when needed.

"General pest control" means different things at different companies, and the differences show up later.

4. What happens if the pests come back?

Ask directly what the re-service policy is. A reputable company will return between scheduled visits at no additional charge if a covered pest returns. Get that in writing rather than as a verbal reassurance.

Also ask which services the guarantee covers. One-time treatments generally are not guaranteed anywhere, and that is reasonable, because a single visit cannot account for what happens over the following months. Ongoing service is a different story, and it should be backed.

5. Is this a contract, and how do I get out of it?

Ask about the term length, whether it auto-renews, whether there is a cancellation fee, and whether anything was bundled in at signup that you did not ask for. Read what you sign. This is the single most common source of pest control complaints.

6. What are you applying, and is it safe around my kids and pets?

You are entitled to know what products are being used and to receive the label information. Ask about re-entry times and what precautions to take with children and pets on treatment day.

A good technician answers this comfortably and specifically, because they deal with the question every day.

7. Do you treat the problem or just the symptom?

This is the question that reveals the most. Spraying visible bugs is easy. Finding the moisture problem feeding the ant colony, or the quarter-inch gap the mice are using, takes actual inspection.

Ask what the first visit involves. If nobody plans to inspect before treating, you are buying a spray, not a solution.

8. Do you know this area?

Central Illinois has its own patterns. Fall rodent pressure as the fields come off. Box elder bugs and Asian lady beetles gathering on sunny walls in October. Eastern subterranean termites in the older housing stock around Peoria and East Peoria. Mosquito pressure along the river.

A company that works here every day knows what your neighborhood is dealing with this month. A national call center does not.

9. What do local customers actually say?

Look at recent reviews, not just the star rating. Are people naming their technician? Do complaints get responded to? Is the company still earning reviews this month, or did they stop three years ago?

What a Straight Answer Looks Like

We built Markley's around the answers we would want as homeowners:

  • Licensed, insured, and local. Serving Peoria, East Peoria, Morton, Washington, and the wider Tri-County area since 1984.

  • Technicians who stay. Several of our techs have been with us for the better part of a decade, and you will see the same familiar faces.

  • Inspection first. We find out why you have the problem before we treat it, because the entry point matters more than the spray.

  • Our ongoing services are guaranteed. If a covered pest comes back between visits, so do we, at no extra charge. One-time treatments are the one exception, and we tell you that up front instead of burying it.

  • No-pressure recommendations. If you have something you can handle yourself, we will tell you. If you do not need a service, we will tell you that too.

  • A 4.9-star rating from hundreds of Tri-County neighbors, and more than 2,500 families who trust us.
