The Illinois Department of Public Health is direct about this. The lasting fix is to seal mice out by closing the openings they use, not just trapping the ones already inside.
Seal any opening larger than ¼ inch. Steel wool held in place with caulking works well. Keep the patch smooth, or mice will grip the edge and pull it out.
Use materials they can't chew. Metal, concrete, mortar, and hardware cloth hold up. Plastic sheeting, screen, wood, and rubber are unsuitable.
Adjust doors, windows, and screens to fit tightly, and add metal edging where you see gnaw marks.
Store food, pet food, and birdseed in sealed glass or metal containers.
Clear the area near the house. Move firewood away from walls, boxes off the ground, and shrubs back from siding.
The order matters. If mice are already inside, sealing first shuts them in and leaves you a dead mouse in a wall. Bring the population down first, then seal.
What Doesn't Work as Well as People Hope
We'd rather say this up front than have you spend money on it. There's little evidence sound drives mice out, so ultrasonic repellers aren't worth it. Cats and dogs catch mice, but don't provide effective control. Good sanitation makes traps work better, but on its own, it seldom clears an infestation.
